biography
Massimiliano Viel, born in Milano in 1964, attended academic piano studies, electronic music, conducting and composition, graduating with full marks under the guidance of A.Corghi at the Conservatorio di Milano "G.Verdi". He then attended masterclasses in composition, computer music, ethnomusicology and interpretation, in Italy and abroad (attending, among others, the Royaumont Foundation in France and the Mozarteum in Wien, Austria) with M.Stroppa, K.Huber, B.Ferneyhough, K. Stockhausen, F.Donatoni and T.Murail. In 1989 he abandoned the piano concert career in favour of the pursuit and research of new sounds and playing techniques with electronic keyboards. As a keyboard player he has collaborated, along the years, with several ensembles such as Nuove Sincronie in Milan, Arditti Quartet, Caput Ensemble in Rejkiavik, MusikFrabrik in Düsseldorf and orchestras such as the Teatro alla Scala Orchestra in Milan, the WDR Orchestra in Cologne and the Orchestra of Paris. He has performed in theaters such as La Scala in Milan, Chatelet Theater and Citè de la Musique in Paris, Het Muziek Theater in Amsterdam, Philarmonie in Colone, the Opera House in Leipzig, the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon and many others. In 1997 he interpreted, for the Canadian première, K.Stockhausen's "XV Piano Piece" at the Mercure Theater in Montreal, Canada. He collaborated, as interpreter and programmer, with composers such as K.Stockhausen, L.Berio, L.Francesconi, F.Romitelli, R.Nova and F.Guerrero. In the same years, he developed his own technical and aesthetical research in musical writing, producing pieces for acoustic and electronic instruments, scores for solo instruments up to full orchestra ensembles, sheduled in festivals such as Milano Musica, Klangforum Heidelberg, Regola e Gioco and performed by musicians such as G.Knox and N.Isherwood or ensembles such as l'Itinerarie. Interested in the relationship between music and other means of expression, he entered upon realizing performances in close contact with theater, videoart and dance. This led to the realization of "EVE" in 1996, an event for live music, electronic music, an actor, paintings and video, during the Festival in Triennale, in Milan. In 1999, unsatisfied by the general stasis of the "serious" music world, he decided to turn to studying the "rest" of the music of his time. This brought him to the creation of many projects and productions, mainly electronic, such as ArtiCoolAction, Overclockd (together with the composer Riccardo Nova), to the collaboration with singers, the production of remixes and the investigation of new instruments for the live performance, like the CDJ, grooveboxes and laptop software. In 2001 he joined OTOLAB, a collective audiovisual laboratory, where he appears with the project 'sn', and where he has taken part in and won festivals such as the Italian Live Media Contest and Net-Mage 2003. Finally, as a compulsory complement to the production and performative side of his work, he has maintained a constant theoretical and teaching activity. He holds the chair of "Composition for Music Teaching" at the Conservatorio "C.Monteverdi" in Bolzano. maxviel.it otolab.net
