- biography
- Pere Villez is a lecturer and researcher at the University of Portsmouth in the UK. His role is as course leader to the MsC in Computational Sound in the School of Creative Technologies. Pere’s research interest is in the synthesis and control of microsounds and is the developer of the Elementary Signal Engine (ESE) an alternative approach to microsound synthesis. His alter ego Pereshaped is a mixture of contemporary and electro-acoustic music. Work spans pieces for solo guitar to computer generated sequences such as Flight Sequence. Flight Sequence began in 1983 as an electro-acoustic composition for imaginary instruments on an 8 bit Yamaha CX5M MSX computer and explores microsonic events and frequency modulated textures. The microsonic FM textures evoke dense articulations combining modernist and post modernist sequences. Other artistic work includes infrared monochrome photography. His visual work is inspired by the work of Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778). Pere has performed extensive including working with STOMP, The Desperate Ones, Manos and in the early Noughties was signed to Universal Music as the subsidiary J13 developing evolutionary computational solutions for music. As well as researching new computer based musical instruments he has contributed writings on microsound synthesis in The Csound Book (chapter 15) and articles in music technology magazines such as Sound On Sound. Pere has organized international music technology events such as the Modular 2002 and Modular 2003 in London.
