- biography
- Leeane Berger, a Saskatoon, SK based artist, has been finding treasures in trash since as far back as she can recall. Beginning with childhood, collecting discarded and unwanted things, out of an innate empathy for inanimate objects. In early years she focused on fiber arts, knitting and sewing, creating intriguing pieces that brought together objects with seemingly little relation, calling attention to her struggle growing up in a small conservative prairie town. In Montreal, 2004 she took to the well littered streets for inspiration. Refurbishing discarded furniture, construction yard scraps, books, electronics, TV's, and nearly anything else she could find for free, provided it could be carried, to create back alley art, anonymous pieces for the public. At a time when she was bound with conflict surrounding the high price of institutional education, Leeane saw this as her only outlet, a way of creating without constraints. Leeane's work has since been influenced by DIY community, mass consumerism and Fluxus art. Before she knew it her dumpster diving ways had propelled her into further exploration of salvaged and found materials through video art. For the past 2 1/2 years Leeane's focus has been on making video and sound art about being back in the prairies and her experiences. She was introduced to the art of VJing in April of 2006 and has since participated and performed in such events as Bee Mine, Frost, Eve's Revenge, Connect Festival '07 and other events in and around Saskatoon, SK. She also made a guest appearance at Motion Notion '07 in Drayton Valley, AB and co-facilitated a two week intensive workshop " VJing with Arkaos" in Prince Albert, SK. Upcoming performances include L.A Bent Festival 2008 and Motion Notion '08. Works in progress include physical computing with Arduinos, VJing with GEM and Pure Data, an open source software, noisy circuit building and bending.
