No computers, no screens, no digital prints and especially no Internet: Webcrash/2800 is the title and the online address of an exhibition shown at Pictura in Dordrecht (Netherlands) in Mai 2008 which mainly focuses on the link as the representative of the artwork in real space. The show was curated by Joan Heemskerk and Dirk Paesmans, better known as JODI, the label which the duo realises Internet-based Art with since the Mid-1990s. The artists provide a window into their recent work in the following interview with Franz Thalmair.

Do you think it is possible to exhibit Net Art in real space?

Yes, but "exhibit" is not a good word, just as you can not "exhibit" a movie, and neither "show" a website. Since there is no defined time duration for a public to spend. And all websites are already being viewed, so we only need to find and redirect viewers to sites, not to screens. To do so we can write keywords or web addresses on the walls or any other surface, and explain, create a "program". It is good to show such event in "real space", the experience of being disconnected from the works makes it a more interesting choice to view later, when and where you like, which is the internet.

Webcrash
What kind of strategies did you apply to "re-shape/translate" the artworks in the physical space?

We held a demonstration in the city center with banners who displayed web addresses and installed the banners later in an exhibition space.

What is your selection of artworks about and in how faris Webcra.sh/2800 connected to Winning Information (http://xxxx.winning-information.com) and to your 1000.del.ici.as (http://del.icio.us/1000.del.ici.as) site?

It is a strong connection between the title, the webadress and the content. Winning Information is a try out and test for a keywording system, with 3-letter tags and adding a graphical theme. 1000.del.ici.as is a 1000 limited link list of the preparation for webcra.sh not focused on a theme.

(Note: del.icio.us has changed adress to: http://delicious.com)

Do you think it is appropriate to exhibit the link to an artwork as the representative of the artwork?

A net(.art)work can not exist without a link. A link is the address of a website, without that link the website would not appear, it is the start button and it is part of the actual work. It is the first line of code to activate a program. It filters out all the other sites. It is a piece of functioning code that is part of the work itself. It brings us from real space to the net.

Is Webcra.sh/2800 curatorial or artistic work?

Both. We installed a program in real space.

Would you like to participate in the project CUREDITING by writing a text about the exhibition?

Lazy-bad-theorists-we-are-! (and proud?to.be) But anyway I propose you to use the photos and texts we already sent you. It is the same subject and we don't have another independent statement about -- -- -- --- -- - - webcra.sh.
